Was there yesterday and saw two jacks caught between 8-10lbs. Also saw a guy lose a tarpon off his boat right under the bridge.

well, since no one has posted a report on this area in awhile ill do the honors. i been going here faithfully for awhile now and in general fishing has been pretty good on the later half of the outgoing with your typical catches of Blue runner and Cudas that seem to be all over the place now that scaled sardines are resident again. The last couple of days have produce a few good size permit on live crabs at the point when casted directly west in front of the Beacon signal. on the later stages on the incoming there have been a slew of Snook hanging around and getting there share of the bait fish that are getting pushed in close at the rocks on the end of the paved walkway. i find hard baits do a better job when the bait is all over the place. Also on that same incoming alot of tarpon can been seen on and out of the inlet mouth within casting distance of you care to lose some tackle. The early morning snapper bite has picked up, and if you know this area then that early morning is basically the only time to get in on some snapper action over there. I mainly fish artificial over there and have a decent amount of success.

Anyways, good luck and see ya out there.

Sounds like good action to me, maybe you'll now have a few heads go up that way (or down) to fish. Have fun

JonathanT305 wrote:Hi, just joined and wanted to ask when is the best time to go over to the inlet? Was thinking of going tomorrow (July 7) and wanted to know what artificials work and wether I should use sardines (caught off the beach today) or cut bait. Mainly going after jacks and snapper but a snook or tarpon would be great! Any help would be greatly appreciated... :D
Hi Jonathan, if your gonna hit the first Tide Change, i would get out there by 11AM this way you can catch some of the incoming but all of the out going. Current wont head out till about 1pm. lately i have been having alot of luck on the Mirrodine wich is my go to hard bait. also the 4" xRap in Black and White have done good lately. you should have no prob catching Jacks and and most likely jump a Tarpon or two at that time if you stick with Hard Baits. i don't think you'll get much on the snapper at that time. but freeline a live sardine as far out as you can as soon as the current shifts(stay on the Edge of the current)and you might catch something better. ( i have done my good deed for today) lol

Good Luck man,
Carlos

i used to fish haulover heavily! catching permit, snapper, snook, large jacks, runners, tarpon, etc....here's the problem...people there, like in some of the piers, dont care to respect other's space! they will see u catch a fish and fish right next to you, cross ur lines and even steal ur bait! weekends get crowded with vacationers and novice fishermen, which is cool...like anywhere else, u wanna fish 2hrs before and after high tide...but if high tide is during this heatwave (10am-4pm), u can pack it up and go swimming! LOL....best bet is early morning and late afternoon high tides. bait should be everywhere now, so sabiking or cast netting threadfins or scaled sardines shouldnt be a problem...u cant park after 10pm and must pay a meter (3hr max=$3). and make sure to be EXTRA careful with the edges of the pavement, it can be very slippery because of the algae buildup. but it should be pretty dried up by now with this heat.. just a warning...just go out and have fun..and just like fishing new spots, its all trial and error, recording data, etc... good luck and tight lines!! :thumleft:

Update. 7-17-12

The past week has been lights out with the Mangroves on both the inlet and bay sides using Spanish Sardines on the PM Slack Tide. (yes, Slack Tide, that place is weird) Yesterday afternoon a very large school of bruiser Jacks came all the way inside the inlet past the bridge to harass a massive school of Spanish Sardines.(looked like 4th of July on the water) Cought a couple of em, both around 15LB Give or take on a XRap.

See ya out there,
Carlos

I would take SnapperFanatics advice and steer clear of that place on the weekends, its not even remotely fun being out there on the weekends. A bit of advice would be to get your tide times and current flow in check before you head out.

Good luck and gives us a report on how you do.

Quick Report for July 23rd about 3pm to 7pm.

Sup fellas,

If you look at tide charts and current flow for the time, it would have been easy to say i should have stayed home or gone to the jetty-side rather than the bay-side but my son wanted to get the line wet.

Tide was heading out (Falling) and current was whipping as usual. Stocked up on Sardines and Cigar minnows fairly quick and given the situation had no choice but to fish the seawall nice and tight (And its a shame to see that nobody does for some reason SMH)

Anyways, My son got about 4-5 decent Mangroves, which he insisted we throw back SMH and a couple under size Muttons. i was in chill mode and didnt fish much, just enjoying the day.

went out this morning for a few hours and only caught 2 undersized grovers...

tried using the sabiki but the bait didnt hit :scold: ...got one cigar minnow and 2 grunts

one thing i learned is that i need to invest in a cast net; some guy there hooked my up with like 10 little sardines he cast net and thats what the grovers bit....

i was actually using a fresh dead sardine and threw it under some rocks and i got hit and when i tried pulling him out (i could literally see him getting out of the hole) my knot unties....and i thought i looped the uni knot enough...more turns next time...i was so frustrated, i finally found a decent sized fish and nada

so yea...need to learn how to use a cast net...seemed like everyone there uses those little sardines...saw some guy pull up 2 keeper grovers at the end of the jetty so that gave me hope for another day :happyfisherman:

hopefully next time i wont be solo...if anyone wants to ride i got mon and wed off everyweek and an SUV...im a beginner but i can hold my own for the most part...just some guidance and an extra set of hands..maybe a castnet? lol i'll drive!!!

anyway..gonna see if i can pick up a cast net and practice a bit before going out there again.

nobody fishes the seawall cuz ur not allowed to do so....bal harbour police will kick u out! nice report tho...nothing beats taking ur kids out fishing! @agonzales, ur better off practicing from the beach before you start trying to cast over those boulders! just cuz some people know how to cast a net, doesnt mean they know how to cast in that specific area. u have to be knowledgeable when casting ur net there..a lot of factors: net size(bigger=more difficult), current speed, amount of rope wrapped around ur hand( cannot have too much loose and cannot let it sink), type of net(fast sinking)...a lot of things to watch out for...if not, then you'd be investing in another one quite quickly! besides, we dont need more crap in the water then what there already is!

its funny you mention that...i was just having dinner with my old man and was telling him that you can just wade on the beach and net a bunch of sardines and that i'll take my talents (or lack thereof :? ) to the beach until im confident enough to try off the rocks

i was also thinking of waiting for the low tide so i can examine the rocks that i wont be able to see when the tide comes in...i was planning on starting with the smallest diameter net...maybe a 6ft one to get my feet wet and figure it out.

Not that sea wall. I think your thinking about the Jetty side SeaWall on the walkway next to the hotel. Yeah, that's a no go.

I was referring to the Bay-side SeaWall on the North Side. Good fishing at times if you just drop the line right at your feet.

Was there last night from about 8pm - 10pm Got bait, but thats it. Not one dam bite or anything.
