Hit the pier Thursday morning to try and get some gogs for bait. None to be had that were worth the effort. Slow night with a short mutton to show for it . First light massive schools of finger size pilchards show up along with some small sardines and gogs. The runner schools were right behind them. Most runners I have seen in a long time on that pier. Had a 20 lb or so cuda chase one I hooked back to the pier and played cat and mouse with it waiting for someone to get a wire rig ready to catch the cuda. As I went to flip the runner the cuda nailed it , short fight on straight 6 lb mono. Hooked a nice snook that frayed me off. Then a nice school of bonita showed up. Hooked one around 10 lbs that was a blast on my Stradic 2000. Got eaten in half next to the pier by a big cuda. ( Maybe one of the guys I sent the pictures to can post them here ) A couple more bonita hooked and lost by others along with a few nice yellowtails but I left once I saw the gogs wouldn't be around.

Nice to be able to make one. Starting next month I'll be making a lot more of them. Look for the one at the end of the month.

Summer baits. Nothing good came up early morning.

I had seen someone working a small crab net off the pier a few weeks ago. It looked somewhat like a pier net but it was smaller. Strangely they were lowering the net well before the first house on anglins.

My question is... what sort of crabs would they be catching off this pier that would be any good to eat? I had caught some bright red crabs off the jettys once, but was too scared to eat them.

We RELEASED this 14"+ fish a few weeks ago (ignoring the advice of onlookers), convinced it was an undersize mutton. Was my ID right, or was this a Lane Snapper??

Thanks. So my ID was right. Nobody understood why I was throwing it back. One even suggested "fillet & release." I have learned to ID my own fish, to stay out of trouble. I dont know if they are clueless, disregard the law, or want to get me in trouble. Or all of the above. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY!!

Based on the coloring, I would have to agree that it is a mutton.
This quote is directly from the "Sport fish of Florida book";
Lane Snapper
Superficially similar to small mutton snapper, with which it may be confused. However, the Lane Snapper, in addition to it's rosy hues, also has broken yellow bars along the sides (running horizontally), and it's fins are mostly yellow. The single black spot on the side is larger, proportionately, than that of the Muttons. The anal fin is rounded."

For me, the easiest way to to tell them apart is the anal fin. As stated above, the anal fin is rounded on a lane, and sharp on a mutton. I always get confused over the colors.
Good job on throwing it back on a "just-in-case" basis. We need more fisher people like that on all the piers.

It is a far better thing to have caught and lost, than to have never caught at all.

look up a photo on the lane snapper. it does look somewhat identical to the mutton, but the spot on the fish is bigger like Boruchlen stated.

Here is what me and my 6yr old caught over the weekend

Saturday 8/23
3' nurse shark
1 mangrove snapper (keeper)
1 yellowtail snapper (short)
6 blue runners
4 hound fish

I have an AWESOME recipe for Snapper Francaise.....

Fillet the snapper, remove the skin, and cut into medium size pieces.
Heat up a pan to medium.
Dredge the fish in flour that you seasoned with salt and pepper.
Shake off the extra flour and dip the fish in scrambled egg.
Add some butter to the pan and cook the fish.
Once cooked, remove the fish and work on your sauce.
Add a little more butter, a cup of wine, and some chicken stock.
Squeeze a fresh lemon into the pan.
Mix a tsp of corn starch in a bowl with a splash of chicken stock.
Add this to the pan to thicken your sauce.
Salt to taste. Also add more lemon or chicken stock to taste.
Place the fish back into the pan to heat it back up for a few seconds.
Then eat it!! Its great over pasta.
You can get a really nice presentaton if you add some lemon slices to to the sauce towards the end, but be careful cooking them too long because the rind will make the sauce really bitter.

I know the recipe sounds complicated... but its REALLY YUMMY...
