KEEP LIVE SHRIMP "ALIVE"
The CubanExpress way....
Live shrimp is a hot bait to use in the up and comming cooler months. Using shrimp will allow you to target all fish and I mean all and every fish imaginable.
Live shrimp is simply irresistible.
Half the battle of catching fish the boatless way is finding them.....and let me tell you, the best way to find fish is with no other than the "alive shrimp".

Great tip CE . I like to use frozen water bottles vs the ice cubes. The bottles stay frozen longer and no hassle with the water killing the shrimp.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Re: KEEP LIVE SHRIMP "ALIVE"
You could also invert a plastic tray to work as a shelf to keep the shrimp from being able to sink in the water.
If you have a drain plug on your cooler you can do that to keep all your bait from soaking in water in other coolers.

next time i will try it with the water bottlesfishnfool73 wrote:Great tip CE . I like to use frozen water bottles vs the ice cubes. The bottles stay frozen longer and no hassle with the water killing the shrimp.
Try it out...the damp moist newspaper keeps the shrimp from drying out and the cool air temp from the ice puts the shrimp into a sedated/hibernation mode. It may seem like they are dead on the newspaper but once they get back in the water they will wake up.permitchaser wrote:very good tip CE i will try it

LONG TIME!....I have had them for 10+ hours in the cooler.Snook hunter wrote:How long do the stay alive and can this be done with sand fleas?
What I do is get them the night before and fish them the next morning and into the early afternoon...no problems
This should also work with sand fleas...maybe someone can chime on the sand flea subject.

Re: KEEP LIVE SHRIMP "ALIVE"
Making the ice with seawater does not solve the problem. Once they become submerged the shrimp stop breathing air and use the oxygen in the water then die if the water loses all its oxygen.

Re: KEEP LIVE SHRIMP "ALIVE"
Didn't know shrimp could breath air outside of the water, trying this tonight. Just threw a container with water in the freezer that matches the size of my cooler. THANKS!

Re: KEEP LIVE SHRIMP "ALIVE"
I think the idea is to avoid the hassle of the bucket & aerator. I will try this with the blue ice packs this weekend & report back.

Re: KEEP LIVE SHRIMP "ALIVE"
We do it the same way with the cooler except we make a wooden tray with a screen bottom that fits in the upper part of the cooler. With ice or what ever you want to cool them with on the bottom of the cooler and the tray about 6" above the ice,you can put shrimp ,sand fleas or minnows in the tray and cover with damp news paper or cloth and go.If you use minnows they will live up to two days out of water and when you put them back in the water they will come back around like they were when you first put then in there.............woody
