Absolutely.

they generally stick to colder water (which is why at this time of year you'd have to get around 100 or 130 feet just to see them. but the farther north you go, the shallower they get. There are pics of kings caught off piers on this forum. If you do a search through deerfield pier or juno pier you may just find it.

8) There are plenty in shallower this time of year. They'll come all the way on the reefs where the food is passing by.

You can hook one almost any day of the week any time of the year at sunrise. Some days there are kings caught all day long.

I havin't beeen fishing for over a month so decided to go wednesday. I picked up my kids and drove out to the pier. When we got there not much was happening. There weren't even too many people there. Started fishing and an assortment of fish started coming over the rail. We ended up with a 18 inch bar jack, 15 inch yellow jack, 3 legal mangrove snappers, 3 undersize yellowtails,2 moonies, 1 small spanish jack, a nice jack crevalle, a bunch of blue runners and of course a number of needlefish. We caught enough for dinner and enough to keep the boys entertained. Great day with my boys.

Thanks for the report, Mark. Great to hear you got back out with the kids! I'm planning on making an appearance over there soon. Work's been busy enough to keep me away.

Finally back near a computer. Trip from Friday 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. First light there were tons of 1 -2 lb jacks from surf to tee. Any lure or bait casted out anywhere on the pier til around 9 a.m. meant a jack followed by about 20 -60 more. Topwaters were a blast for the first couple then the realization set in that nothing else would get a chance at the lures with the jacks around. A small school of a few dozen large bluefish showed up around 8 a.m. , hooked one on a jig and busted it off trying to flip it on 6 lb mono would have been about a solid 4 - 5 lb blue. Saw a few smaller mackeral coming up all 12 - 16 inches with a few larger ones flashing here and there. The mackeral were very inactive and struck more out of curiosity that hunger. I saw two keeper pompano come up one on jig one on bait . Saw Wimbery catch a nice mackeral on live bait and decided to do the same landed about a 4 lb Spainish after having either a huge Spainish or nice kingfish chase a bait back as I was reeling it in to replace it with a fresh bait.
The fish of the day went to a guy that was using a spinning rod with a small red Abu Garcia bait caster on it with 17 lb test. He was hooked up and walking the pier fighting the fish. Asked him what he had on and he said a big hammerhead shark. He said he had it straight up and down and had seen it before it took off again. Watched him fight it for about 20 minutes and he got it straight up and down and sure enough about a 6 - 8 ft hammerhead surfaced under the pier before taking off again. The hook simply pulled after about 10 more minutes. I was stunned that a hammerhead that big was almost beaten on a bass reel with 100 yards of 17 lb mono and 40 lb leader.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

To add to this:
I got there when the guy was still fighting the hammer. There were decent sized greenies hanging around under the pier, but it took work and patience to get them. After the mac bite shut off there really wasn't much going on until the afternoon. Two pods of mullet made their way south under the middle hut in a hurry there were big tarpon smashing them a little north of the first buoys. One jumped about 20ft from the pier pretty cool to watch. Bait sized ladyfish showed up and were being caught left and right. After that I head out to the tee. My dad got some grovers and a decent lane. I threw out half a greenie and it got smashed, but the hook got straightened out. Whatever it was, was ripping drag like it was nothing. I stayed out until 11:30 ended up catching a few blue fish in the 5lb range all released.

I'm new to this site, but the more I read these reports and past threads I'm
amazed at the amount of sharks that are inshore within just a few feet of
the beachgoers swimming. If they only knew.

Just a few days ago I witnessed a mullet school being
chased and exploding to the surface and within 5 feet of the shoreline.
Everyone in the water got out that water quick. They looked scared too.
Again, if they only knew.

Fished from 445am-9ish. Bite was good from 5-6 then it slowed down. Got one nice Mutton, Had a bunch of throwbacks that were undersize(yellow tail and mangrove) I saw a few other guys pull up a decent Mutton or two. A few guys near the shore were after tarpon and ended up jumping a big one around 7ish.In the 4 hours i was there I probably lost 20.00 of tackle to the bottom. gotta love it. Water was crystal clear and calm as day. -Tight lines
