What kind of sheet metal did they put in the inlet? Are the snook laying up underneath it to ambush baits coming around the groin?
I guess the city is worried about getting sued if someone fails on to the groin while trying to get bait or snook. The police will give you a ticket for fishing or netting bait around that groin. I stopped fishing that area from shore after getting a tickets.
Are people trying to climb down onto the metal sheet above the groin? Bal Harbor is going to make a killing writing tickets for people trying to fish there.
Plenty of fish to be caught. Just a biaatch getting around the rocks and releasing undersized snook and snapper without getting into a fight with someone who wants to keep them.

The old cuban guy with the permit has that place wired. I'd say he a few of his buddies have that place wired as they fish there almost every day. With snook being closed I'm sure they're targeting the permit pretty hard. On the right tide and weather conditions permit can be caught almost every summer day. Good luck and you really hammer the permit on the right day.
Drift a live baits back in the rip for big tarpon is my tip for the day.

Hello Everyone,

I joined this forum awhile back when I lived in Tampa, but I recently moved to Miami.

Browsing through boredom on this site often translates into an insatiable desire to fish looking at all those pictures.

Unfortunately, I have no gear at all, so I am starting to make a list of things I need on rigs to try using.

1) Do I need a fishing license to fish from Haulover?
2) The cudas are a little worrying, but I want to focus on bottom rig for snapper. Do I still need steel wire? Any recommendations for rig setups around the jetty rocks?
3) Nets and I don't get along, but maybe because I always used them off of piers. Do you guys have the same luck with artificial?
4)Around the rocks, primarily for snapper, do you guys prefer braided line or mono?

Thanks for all the good info as always, I look forward to contributing to the east cost side of this forum now. I live on 80th and collins, so if anyone goes after I set up my gear and needs a companion, let me know.

On a side note, I swim all the time after work by North Shore Park. For about two weeks now, the water temperature has dropped. I was freaked out by small pilchards while swimming (because shark week was on!!!!), wondering what bigger fish pilchards may bring.

All your posts about shark fishing, kind of got me worried when I am swimming. Are pilchards a sign of larger predators? or I am being paranoid and overly cautious?

Thanks!
John

You will need a fishing license to fish the jetty . As to the wire leader,if going after snapper or almost any other fish ,loos it .I prefer mono over braid . Use sabikis to catch bait .Artificials are good too (jacks, macks ,blue fish, cudas)

Welcome to the forum.

You will need a fishing licenses to fish from shore or any structure attached to the shore. (ex. piers or bridges)
For snapper fishing I would not use wire since it will turn off the snapper bite. Use mono for your bite leader and it will increase your chance of catching fish. Around jetties, it is recommend to fish with a fish finder rig using a short leader. Or a knocker rig will work well too if you are using live bait.
For abrasion, I recommend staying with mono. Braid cuts very easily around rocks and pilings. You can have braid as a backing in case a big fish runs on you. This way you have enough line capacity to keep fighting the fish.

I hope this helps, if you have anymore questions please ask. Good luck.

OK guys, what's the deal on Haulover these days?

Is the park still closed at night?

Any parking issues on the south side by Bal Harbour?

They start towing after 10 on the south side, but we regularly net bait under the bridge after 10, we just stick close to the car.

went there yesterday for about 20 minutes to throw a gotcha. wind was kicking up some pretty big swells. saw the guy next to me catch a blue runner on what seemed to be a small dine. overall nothing else going on, pretty packed.

quick question, what artificial do you guys recommend to take there? i'll try to go more often in the afternoon.

Headed over today to toss some spoons and Raps to catch a few macks and maybe some blues. The water was kinda rough and goonies were looking like bank robbers. I admit it was chilly but not that cold. After about an hour of tossing I caught nada, I seen 2 blue runners pulled up by a guy next to me using squid. But not much happening other than that. So I went home.

yes he does, mostly when the permit and pompano bite is on. ive known santiago for about 15 yrs. we used to go catch shrimp together at the bridges off of biscayne. really nice guy. he still does work there. he'll go during his lunch break to get pomps. the guy is sick at catching permit. :dude: . if he knows u, he'll hold down a spot for u during the pompano run, cuz it gets crazy over there. we'll i havent been fishing there in a while, been having luck at rickenbacker for macks so far this early season. tight lines!

Been out there every day this summer I have been getting snapper, tarpon, snook, and 7lb+ Jacks and cudas. There has been some smaller baits ad some nice sized Spanish sardines that usually come through later in the day. Ill be the kid with the big green hand truck cart with rod holders on my cooler

Here are some of the fish worth taking a picture of Using 8lb test for most of these and no more than a 17lb fluorocarbon leader and a video of me catching a snook.
