Amen... I HATE the rick with a passion, but I gotta get out there with Alex as soon as we get a good cold front! It can definitely produce plenty of macks. You become a victim of your own success though and all of the sudden you have 30 googs crossing your line cuz u caught 1 fish.

Went fishin yesterday 12/19/13 at the Rick and turned out to be a beautiful day. Fished high tide about 10:30 and caught a few Macks.. On the bottom was just the usual pin fish and small grunts. The couple next to us was keeping every small fish, pins and grunts, and got a full cooler. Does anybody know how these people cook them? way too small to fillet and even Pin fish? I thought maybe make a soup or something I don't know. Well anyway good day on the bridge and caught some dinner. A couple 13 and 14 inchers and the biggest was 16.

i know my aunts and uncles make soup of out grunts. i dont know about pinfish though, we usually throw those back if we don't use them for bait.

Fished high tide today and the outgoing for a couple hours and didn't catch squat. The wind was howling out of the SE and just pushing jigs and baits right back into the bridge. Leeward side was dead too. Caught a couple threadfin herrings and baited em but no takers. This spot is puzzling.

Do the tarpon ever cruise in this area in the spring? Seems like it could be good water on the north side of the bridge on the concrete catwalk that's level with the water.

How long of a dip net will I need for this pier. A friend bought a 2 piece and said he couldn't even reach the water from the first light.

you dont even know the half of it man, they really dont care at the rick. The smell of piss and dead houndfish on the deck make their trip quick.

since im here i might as well report.

There were 2 kingfish (keepers) caught towards the end of the bridge last week (@snapperfanatic, you were totally right dude) and unfortulately there were also a couple grouper caught (and kept)..there's no telling these guys anything either so i just called FWC but of course nothing happened.

Me and my buds went monday and got into the macks fairly well. I think between the 3 of us we nailed about 12 and kept 7 in the 15-18" range (more were 15" lol). All on jigs. Some guy nearby caught one that was 20"+ on a trolleyed live dine but that was the only bigger mack i saw. Also had a couple snakes hit (luckily i caught them and took the opportunity to educate my boys on how to tell the difference).

My boy had a nice yellow jack ready to flip and pulled the hook last minute, sucked to see him swim away, but atleast we got to see him.

Bait was very scarce which could explain the lack of action, there weren't even pinfish around.

Anyone going out tomorrow night shrimping? I've never been but i'll be out there tomorrow night to give it a shot.

Took a walk today at high tide just before slack. When the tide was moving saw a few mackerel and ladyfish come up on white buck tails and gotchas. Nothing of any size and no bait. Water was an off green. Changed to an incoming around 1 or so.
Dreaming the dream that one day I can be as good as some of the boatless pros and catch some 12 inch mangrove snapper.

Took a walk out there today and the shrimp must have popped good last night. More than a few buckets and coolers loaded with 8-15 count shrimp. Not the usual Key Biscayne smalls.

Initial plan was to get live bait and hop around the bay for trout. Couldn't find bait within netting range so we tried topwaters and gulps. Managed some nice jacks off a school of mullet getting blasted and some small cudas.

fished the rick this morning from 730-10

water was flat, green, and there was no wind. There were threadfins all over the bridge and really big ones too.

Ended up catching 13 macks and kept 5 in the 18-22 inch range and gave the rest to my bud (he only managed 2 :( ). The others were on the smaller side but still around 15-16 inches each, they were all almost the same size all around the bridge with a couple bigger ones mixed in. This was by far one of the better days ive had at the rick in a while. Caught em all on crappie jigs but live thredfins were working for other guys.

The old guy who sells bait there told me the shrimp ran this morning around 3-4AM. He had a couple hundred JUMBO live shrimp in his pens. Haven't seen them that big all season.

Anyone fish any of the piers this morning?

Making me regret not going out yesterday, I was half way out the door but some plans fell through.

How far down the bridge are you catching the macks? Tides are looking good for shrimp this week + a couple cold fronts rolling in.

I was there on Tuesday of this week and would probably have limited out had i not gotten careless and let a mackerel bite the very tip of my right hand forefinger. This happened just before 9:00 AM and I bled for the next two hours like a "stuck pig". I'm right handed so it made casting crappie jigs difficult, but i still managed 12 macks by 10:30. (Four were in the 19-20 inch range, with three in the 17-18 range and the others were smaller but legal.)

To answer your question: The bridge is 487 yd's long but most of the action seems to take place in the middle 130 yd section. (starting 150 yd's from the seawall) However, i have seen large mackerel taken way up high on the bridge, but few people fish up there, since you are much higher off the water. When the mackerel are thick i have caught them 50 yards from the bridge abutment.
