If you cant hold bottom without snagging then just free line a piece of cut bait with a 4-5/0 circle hook and wait for a bite while it drifts away. I would do this while your bottom rigs soak though, I'm sure not all of the Rickenbacker is a snagging bottom, just find that sand patch.

Was out there again today for about an hour. Two mackerel were caught to the left and right of me. They were 14 - 18". Oh and an unfortunate seagull tried to grab some guy's lure midair and got snagged. It survived, but it didn't look too happy.

I was experimenting with a straw rig and tossing spoons. Didn't catch anything.

Was out there for a little bit this morning. The crowd was pretty thin.

I caught 2 lizardfish almost immediately and within minutes of each other. Damn they are ugly! Also snagged a small grunt with a got-cha. Didn't see any other fish get caught.

Live sardines freelined or on a float rig and crappie jigs. Is how you catch Macks at the Rick.

Went out to Rickenbacker cause I was nearby just to see if people were catching anything. When I was there I didn't see any fish coming over the rail but I was only there for a short time. I spoke to two guys fishing that had caught spanish macks on live shrimp. Besides that I didn't see anything esle.

Really under the driving bridge? I never would have thought that

no...not under the driving bridge....i dont use live bait or any bait for that matter ever there...but like im sure you know, the outgoing tide current comes towards the bridge...so when i use crappy jigs (all i use there, all white 1/8oz or chartreuse sometims) they have a more natural drift working with the current....sometimes i tip the hook with a bare piece of frozen shrimp...but you will catch lizard fish and pins like that too sometimes..

heres what i do....10lb mono----20lb fluoro---no swivel (they sometimes hit the swivel)---now wire---1/8 oz crappie jig....if the wind is howling or the current is ripping i will use a small split shot about 2-3 feet above the jig head. Some people use it right at the head, juan likes to do this because sometimes the macs hit the split shot and there goes your rig. I like the split shot a couple feet up because it allows the jig to fall at a slower rate in the water column so it stays in the top half most of the time...but macs will hit it. Now sometimes they get picky, especially if the water is clear. Thats when i tip it with a small piece of frozen shrimp. I know guys use belly strips on the piers and so do i..but for some reason at the rick they just hit the shrimp tipped jigs WAY more often. So i stick with my method.

im a goog but you can reference my past posts and see that i've caught a lot of macs there...its cake when they run....the biggest macs ive caught have been early in the am...you gotta play them real light if you're using crappie jigs or the hook will straighten out,....you'll lose some,..but have lots of fun..and thats what its all about...

remember (and this goes for everywhere)..sometimes they want it skimming the top fast,...sometimes they want it popping slow..sometimes they want it to sink to the bottom and have you jig it up quick....just work the jig until you figure out what they want.

ideal conditions as far as im concerned is a high outgoing tide...SE winds 8-15 (but E or S winds are ok too) and during the months of jan-march...once the sun peeks over Virginia key

but what the hell do i know...

however i do hate when people bring 5 rods out and just occupy the whole ramp.. not that they need 5 rods, they will only play with 1 or 2, and if you throw your jig out they be mad... why can't people just share and take only what they need...

Everything you said seems to be on point with what the guys on the bridge said. I forgot to mention that they said they caught them in the morning and one of them was using a jig tipped with belly strip.

Tonight our of boredom i was reading the old posts from page one and came across a photo posted on this thread two years ago that i shot at the Rick for the Dade County Tourism Dept in the mid 1970's. I no doubt took this photo on a weekend during the mackerel run in winter. I used a 105 mm F2.5 Nikkor lens on a Nikon F. We shot Black & White and color slides back then, but B & W was easier to get published due to the lower cost compared to color, especially back in those days.

Thanks Old School for posting the great old pic. The old cars coming over the bridge are a perfect time stamp.

Funny how the county used to look at fishing, write em a letter and see how many bridges you can legally fish from now
