Caught a 20 inch Spanish and a small Cero two weeks ago at the Rick and lost another 20 inch mack on the hoist. It was a very slow day and i was the only person that caught mackerel. Very few people were fishing since the forecast was for rain but it never actually rained. However it was overcast the entire morning. Used several different lures but all three fish hooked were on Crappie Jigs.

By the sounds of it, those bread shrimps should be really tasty! Maybe, I'll try shrimping one day!
Good luck to all of us going out fishing tomorrow =D

Went to rickenbacker this morning with a buddy of mines and his go and caught 12 macks between the 3 of us...2 of them were 19" and 21" respectively, but most were in the 15-16" range..lost many, including a "dino" mack on the first hookup that cut me off after a 5 min fight near the bridge. As expected, I knew they would fire up with this first "real" front of the year. I caught my fish on feathered jigs while my buddy got his on live shrimp and pilchards. Wind wasn't bad in the a.m until 11 am hit and it just got ridiculous. ENE 25 easy with gusts! But a great day for macks at the rick! Tight lines!!

Way to go! I was planning to show up at the Rick but had an unexpected workload that got me stuck at work until 4 AM... I was still going to go but.... when I woke up it was already noon.... hahaha... did I miss a good opportunity! Regardless, I am so glad you had such a blast! I eventually got there but around 3 PM and the wind + current was on full blast...

I am gonna try tomorrow morning =D

Yea, u kinda missed it...the early morning bite was great...but once the current changed to incoming and the wind began to blow 25+ it was over! I saw a few flashers that were bigguns! Crappie jigs proved to be to small for some of the mack because I got cut off 4x with them so I abandoned them for the feathered jigs

What is this feathered jig you speak of

wow. going through the extra hassle of providing a pic.
Ya know for me one of the hardest things is deciding when to stop using a hot jig as it gets wore out. Eventually the choice becomes clear of course but when the bite stops. Is it because of a different lure or they just stopped biting. Getting cut off makes it a clear choice.

Was at the Rick between 7AM until 11:30 AM. Air temp was around 71, wind was around 7-10 mph, water was green and it was very cloudy. The bridge wasn't crowded like a normal weekend and so except for the wind, it was a great day out. The live bait regulars had several hookups but many got cut off and didn't manage to pull any out of the water. One guy did catch a nice size Spanish that required a net but I didn't get a chance to go to him and check it out so I don't know its size but I would assume around 19"-21" (snout to fork).

Things started slow. I was using crappie jig and at around 8:30, I landed the second Spanish of the day (around 17-18") then the guy fishing next to me in the same setup landed a similar sized Spanish. Macks were striking here and there without anyone getting a good hookup and action died down until around 10 AM when they started biting again for a short window of time. That's when I landed my second Spanish. Guy next to me landed one soon after and it was quite sizable.. I think it was a 19".

The two of us were the only ones working the crappie jig and it was very productive. It's one of those days where crappie jigs triumphed over live baits  Overall, a total of 5 decent sized macks were pulled while I was there.. and lots of people experienced cut-offs.

On a side note, I've been catching small barracudas that have a slight brown tint. They might not be actual barracudas but they look very similar and the guy next to me told me it was a good eating fish called woncho or something like that so I gave it to him. He said it tasted great when fried. Anyone knows what I am talking about? I'd appreciate if anyone can get me a name for that fish..maybe next time i'll keep one and see how it tastes... but if it's barracuda.. I don't feel brave enough to risk ciguaterra poisoning. :P

Until next time, happy fishing!

Ah! You're the man! Thank you PaulieBoy. They are indeed called sennets (southern sennet, Sphyraena picudilla) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_sennet They still belong to the family of barracudas so I wonder if they can cause ciguaterra poisoning but i'll check and i'll post if I find anything. Merlin you give good report. Thoroughly enjoyable reading. Congrats on the score. It always amazes me how the guys that put in the most time are also the luckiest. Strange (tommy

Hi guys,

I went out today between 6 AM until 11:30 AM. Temperature was around 72, bit cloudy, slight breeze, green and relatively calm water. There were some ballyhoos near the entrance that could be caught with chum + cast net and lots of menhadens to be had halfway through the bridge on sabikis the whole time I was there. At the start, there were only 3 people including myself and by the time I left, there were around 20 or so people.

Tide and current were both outgoing when I got there but action was very slow until 9 AM. I used crappie jig and had couple of decent strikes but hook didn't set. Slack tide hit around 9:30 but I landed a mack before action slowed down. When tide switched about an hour later, I landed the other two macks and two 9" blue runners that were fat and juicy but I let the jacks go. A guy on troll rig with automatic reel hooked something pretty big and the excitement it generated was pretty fantastic... only to find out a bit later that it was a ray... I thought he had hooked a king based on how his rod bent so hard but oh well. :? When I was about to leave, another person landed a Mack on a transparent bobble float + red straw + treble hook. A total of 4 Macks were caught today at the Rick but they were all on the smaller side.

Today was another win for artificial lures. Live baits didn't work very well - A live-bait regular put out several menhadens he caught on sabiki on several popping corks but he didn't have any hookup and his baits were ripped apart. Maybe it was the Macks or something else but I wouldn't know.

Image

With the cold front coming in soon, Mack fishing should be fun at the Rick.

Tight lines :reeling:
