Miami Beach - Surf Fishing - Report

Hey ricky9 !!
Out of 80 views of my post you were the only one to respond - Thanks.

Well I did go Friday after work with two of my co-workers/friends.
My one buddy Brian is trying for bait with a Sabiki and is not having much luck. After about an hour and a half of me drowning shrimp I have resigned myself to the fact that I'm not going to catch anything today.

I love telling fellow anglers: "You never know".

Brian catches a Croaker of about 5 inches and I tell him give me that bait.
I put the Croaker on my 20lb outfit - Penn 700 Greenie loaded with Sufix on a 7 ft Jarvis Walker Royale Gold Custom m/h rod, toss it out, sit back down in my chair, crack a fresh ice cold Bud, and wait.
About 25 minutes later just as it was getting dark I see the tip of my rod start to jitter about like it was having a seizure - so I yell "Craoker's Freakin' out", jump out of my chair and just as I reach for the rod it starts screaming that song we all love to hear.
Set the hook hard twice and this sucker starts heading for Ft. Ldle. in a hurry. Walked the beach north about 100 yds. as this fish ran on me 9 times. We wore each other out.

49" Snook - my biggest Snook ever.

Sorry no pics - but I've got 2 witnesses whose cell phone cameras don't work well in the dark.

Fish was revived and released unharmed.
You never know.

Croaker = "Snook Candy" in my book !!

Gonna try again this evening !!

I miss seeing you and Styngray at Angler's B&T since I'm not working part time weekends anymore. Rick brought his oldest son in for less money per hour. That's OK - I need some time off 'cause I'm back to work full time now anyway.

The shoulders (girth) on her were huge and couldn't get my hand even halfway around her tail while reviving her - had to hold her underneath (delicately).

I thanked her as she swam off - a fish I'll never forget.

Like bridgefisher said, many people go a long time looking for a fish of that magnitude, and most never get the chance. 49" is quite a mama.

I'm still working to break 30lbs - I'm stuck on 28lbs. And I've been at it for about 17 years now.

Thanks for the congrats !
That fish was possibly a state record or very close to it. Florida State record is 44 lbs 3 oz.
My two buddies that were with me (I now refer to them as my witnesses) were both clicking away with their cell phone cameras as I was removing the hook and laying out the lawstick. But because it had just turned DARK - none of the pics came out.
I don't know anything about cell phone cameras so I don't know why the pics didn't come out and I'm so sick about not having a picture of my once in a lifetime fish that I haven't even asked what happened. No flash ? Do said cameras have a flash ? Forget to turn flash on in all the excitement ? Fat thumb ?
I was so concerned with getting the fish back in the water that I didn't concern myself with camera results until she was back in the water and released.
Needless to say - I'm studying the art of Snook fishing - i.e. tides - moon phases - evening - morning.
My Penn Spinfisher 700 on its Jarvis Walker stays in the car ready to go.
You will break that 30# goal you've set.

I am proud - and very grateful that 2 of my friends were there to witness the excitement - not an evening of fishing I will soon forget - June 22nd '07

Mac daddy Snook slayer I'm not - but I do have a few under my belt and I like to think I know what I'm doing once the hook is set.
The one strange thing about the battle with this fish was the fact that she never jumped once. She just kept heading north up the beach - one run after another. When I got her to the sand she was wore out - I think the reason she didn't jump is because she was probably full of eggs.

I don't know how to pull this up (computer illiterate) but if you go to Broward County Reports - page 6 - Oct 14 '06 - "I Love the Beach" that's me.

I would concur on the not jumping. I've noticed that the bigger fish are doing exactly the very same thing and fleeing in a northly direction as well. It kinda puzzles me as to why they go to the left. They don't seem to want to hit topwater or at least my offerings. But the jigwork right at the shore break is gettiing the bigger snook for me. The little guys are what I'm experiencing on top water. Disclaimer. Your results maybe different.

Wow, 49 - what a slob!!!

Friggin holy grail right there !

I have caught some BRACKISH big snook on topwater, but rarely have had much luck with bigger ocean snook on top.

Quite honestly, I have also not put the time into beach snookin as you guys have...
