Manatee next to Yak!

Post by TheReelHangover »

Went out kayak fishing yesterday out of Morningside Park in Miami. Towards the end of the day I was just taking a break and a manatee bumped my kayak scaring the crap out of me.. When I looked down it was about the size of the yak. It was eating some grass and seaweed that I had on the bottom from being in the flats.. Pretty awesome to see.. I had the camera (my phone) in a ziplock in the dry hatch. By the time I got it out I could only get a few seconds of the manatee before it went under..

Haha, that's pretty cool he was eating the grass on your yak. I've been seeing them every trip the last couple months, they are all over the inshore waters up here. I spooked one yesterday, didn't even know he was there until he took off from under me, left a huge boil right under my yak.

Yea I didn't know it was there until I felt a little bump and then looked.. I saw on the news that there are hundreds of them in the intercoastal waterways... they showed an above shot of and area and there had to be over 50 just right there..

Does anyone know where you can go and watch them in Ft. Lauderdale? When I was young my Dad use to take me somewhere by the powerplant and there was an area to watch them.. Dont know where that is now... Any ideas?

That area by the FPL plant in Port everglades is closed down to public. Don't know where you could go to see them but if you have kayak, launch at Convoy Park (Homestead), paddle North to the canal and hang out there for a while in the morning, they are usually up in that canal this time of year.

You have not kayak'd until you take the Manatee plunge.. more than one of us have accidently spooked a manatee under the yak and been tossed in the air, they are powerful and fast when they want to be.

Is lettuce the best bait for manatees? I've been using iceberg but haven't been getting any bites. Maybe I should upgrade to Romaine... Lol only joking.
