Bonito Rigging / Cocoa Beach Shark'n 9/8

I go to school in Orlando and make the trip to Cocoa Beach to get my fix of fishing when I can. I am new to shark fishing and scored some decent size bonito to use as bait from a friend. I set up a double 8/0 hook rig with the hooks spaced about 6" apart on 480# cable tied to the 80# braid mainline. I then hooked through a large chunk of the bonito. (One under the dorsal spine of the fish and the other in the meaty flesh.) I tried to hide the shanks of the hooks in the flesh. Because I am a poor college student and don't have a yak I swam the bait out wrapped in a ziplock bag out past the breakers on a surfboard 150 yds. from the shore. Since the surf was rough I had to use about 2# of weight (after trial and error) to keep the bait from washing down the shore. All this was done to reel the bait in time after time with no hits. Not even a sign of anyone in a grey suit touching my what I thought "shark candy." Am I missing some fatal step? Or just a slow day at Cocoa? Any tips or pointers? I'm all ears (or I guess eyes).

i dont see anything wrong that could keep you from hooking on to a shark but what you can do is get a cheap yak from dicks sporting goods (i got one for about $230) and take your baits out to 200-300 yds (depends how far the sand bars are) this will improve your odds. keep reading the posts to learn proper rigging techniques and about the weights. for me it was pretty much trial and error so be patient.
