if i have 130lb braid and a 130lb mono leader, what do you think will break first? also i can get a spool stren braid at like half off, is it any good?

Braid is always gonna abrade before mono because of the smaller diameter. I'm sure the the braid has a higher tensile strength in a pull test.

The braid will cut through the mono if you put enough pressure on it, so it will look like the braid broke.

im not real worried about abrasion, more straight on pulling. so bth you say its gonna break at the knot? thats what i was figuring. anyone have an opinion about the stren braid? good, bad, ugly?

Thats why you need to use the correct knots. You can use a bimini twist to form a loop in the braid and then attach a wind on leader. Or you can buy a small, inline wind on barrel swivel and attach the braid and the mono like that.

It somewhat depends on what brands you are using. Under sheer pulling power, for the most part, I would say the mono would unquestionably break first (unless its powerpro...I have heard powerpro undertests). I have not heard anything about stren.

i agree with jetty on the not loosing the braid. i think i might try to tie a figure 8 knot with the 130 to braid. a version of the albright may work too. im gonna have to experiment. def not gonna put a swivle between them, not running that through the guides of the pretty new rod!

IMO JDL nailed it; tie a bimini or Aussie plait in braid and mono and attach with a loop to loop aka cats paw. I been doing the plait with loop to loops and it works well; bout the best connection you can make (not mine though the plaits are ugly sometimes lol) imo just takes time. But even the most experinced offshore guys have problems with braid cutting the mono under pressure, the loop to loops have to be done right. They say the "cross loop" helps with the cutting, just an extra step to the loop to loop. My 2
