Good point, I can lean it over the rail...
BTW, it is prowrap color fast (no color preserve reqiuried per spec) size A 650 yard.
I want to use it about 300 yards for daily practice... And later, I will let you know to see if you still want to trade 350 yard.

My butt OD = 0.94 inch = 23.9mm
Fuji Reel Seat ID has 24mm and 26mm

I think 24mm ID works for 23.9mm butt OD because the reel seat will be mounted about 12" above the butt.
OD of rod cross section 12" above the butt should be around 22mm or less ( I assume 2 mm diameter reduction per every 12")

What do you think?

If this is a 9 foot rod, a 12" butt is way too short IMO. The reel will be too low on the rod and the setup will be off-balance. But that's just me.

Hmm, balance... didn't think about it...

Are you talking about rod bending balance or weight balance?

No he is talking bout leverage.

At 18 to 24 rear you have much more leverage and with that more power on the lift and much less tireing on a fight.

Both...all of my 9 foot rods have at least a 20" butt, most are in the 24" range.

I figure it really depends how you fight with monsters...
I think most deep sea bottom rods come with long rear and short fore grip or the other way around.

1)For captain's chair, I am guessing 24" rod butt probably better???
2) For stand-up fight with rod butt on fight harness, 18" may be better .
3) For stand-up fight with on "belly", 12" may be "OK".
Disadvantage of short butt would be location of right hand Vs left hand if rod needs up and down motion to retrieve the line.
Most holding/bending torque has to come from left arm (right arm can't contribute much as it is too close to butt)...
I would think two speed reel may make some difference as with short butt, I think right hand have more reeling power.

4) With armpit, it doesn't appear it make any difference as long as butt goes thru armpit. I think this is the worst fighting position.
5) With leaning the rod over the rail, it appears long fore grip will help.

Guys

As it is important, hit me up with your thought.

u should take a trip to bass pro with a measuring tape and feel/measure out all the sizes, angles, fighting positions..then go home to build...

or bring your pile of things over.. i have plenty rods to try n fit..start your build

Somehow, a feeling is haunting me that all of my effort will be wasted just to prove why I have to listen to STRIZ or PP.
This bottom rod will be wrong with 12" butt. I think PP and STRIZ really pointed out the problem...
And this is major issue not like cosmetic issue as pointed out by KOTS.

So I want to do the following for rod butt.
Butt 2" 7/8--1st rear arm 4"--- diameter 0.9" blank length (tbd) --- second rear arm 4"--Reel Seat 5" ---EVA Forearm16"
Basically, there are two rear arms apart. How much apart is to be determined.
I will insert butt and 1st 4" rear arm and want have a feel how long the rod butt has to be.

Tentatively, I think about 16" from butt to beginning of reel seat, which means 18" from butt to reel.

Do you have any experience with WINN grip (it is golf club grip) ?

Making decision on grip ad butt length seems making more gray hair...
The problem is me. I just can make freaking decision.

I decided to make a simple drawing to show everyone. Hit me up with what you think?.

My advice to you, is do not experiment with other stuff, and have someone help you put the the EVA FOAM and REEL SEAT on the blank I don't think you will pull it off by yourself it is too much to grasp on your first time AGENT JONGSOO. pss the bottom drawing I like. C but with the bottom foam in between 18'' to 24'' .

Yes, I understand how critical to put EVA form and Reel seat. It seems this is one way ticket.
When I am ready, I will look for someone help me out for inserting EVA and REEL Seat. I still have address of your house
Also, I really appreciate your concerns on my hands-on skill... At the end, my expectation on the outcome is not that high (I know the limitation of inexperience)... But the spirit is I will do all of my homework, build my ugly rod, and live with it no matter what bad it is without any regret...

BTW, when you said 18 to 24", is it from butt cap to the center of reel seat?

Well I would do 18" eva rear and 9" foregrip. Realseat will be at 5.25"

Butcap get yourself the rubber gimbal. IMO they have been trustworthy and stable yet soft enough not to give you a blue spot on the belly when you stomach the rod.

Reelseat install is more easy than you might believe. Take any youtube vid amd you will know.

For the rear grip at 18 on your first I can see you already with a high red head trying to force it down the blank therefore I have decoded to give you a hint.

When you buy the rear eva buy it with the right ID. Remember eva has some stretch. I am to lazy now to look up the blank dia but a call to mudhole or whereever you order and they will supply with the correct ID.

Here is the trick. When you put on the rod bond on the blank for the rear eva put it on sparingly meaning not to much and very even. Put it on at least 3" longer as the rear grip will with it's ID touch the blank. Do a dry run for that meassure.
Take your rear grip and a knife and cut a bevel at the opening that faces the butcap.

Here the trick to make it go down like butter. Get yourself some elmers rubber cement in any publix or other store. When your rodbond is on the blank take a liberal amount and swipe a couple inches inside the eva and put some lines north and south on top of the rodbond. When you then slide down the grip once it touches the point where it natually closes to the blank pull it an inch back and swipe some more elmers it. Then twist the eva on the first 5 or so inches. Then pusch the eva down the blank. It will slide like butter.

Note: You have to do that relativly quick cuz the elmers gets rubbery within 3 minutes. So prepare good and do it fast. No worries about the rodbond that stays workable for some time. You can then clean up the blank right after that with some denatured alcohol.

By the way you can entirely skip the rodbond if you choose a snug ID on the eva. It will stretch enough and the elmers will make it slide down and give enough bond that the eva will never go nowhere once the grip is on.

Tip buy 2 pieces of eva cuz I am almost certain you will mess up the first time.

The foregrip just with rodbond no elmers. The ID of the blank is little enough that conventional install methods suffice and you need the rodbond there alone to make a tight bond since the eva will be more relaxed at a point where the blank ID has become small.

There you go

Sorry for you being upset, that is the least I want...I mean it.

But I want to say you got me wrong.
Putting grip and reel seat has to be done in someone's house. I saw your rod building set up in your house.
By saying "I still have your address", I was indirectly asking if you could be the someone who could help putting grip and reel seat.
And I will take your answer as "no" from above quote. Yes, your dog was nasty one and I could't do anything unless you hold that damn dog...

If I think of being in your shoe, meaning someone tells " I know your address", I would be freaked out as well. (sorry)
I fully understand your reaction. So shake it off :thumright: :chillpill: And I need to complete this mission...

This is what I got from your post.
For rear arm eva,
1) do all the necessary dry measurement and mark it. I had to cut eva a little bit for butt cap.
2) lubricate 3" of blank and EVA foam with rod bond.
3) Push eva and 1" and back up, apply elmer cement (1 inch back and forth).
4) twist eva while forcing down first 5 inch.
5) And then all the way.
I have to do this quick as Elmer becomes rubbery in 3 min.

For fore arm, I will only use rod bond.

Here are inner and outer diameters.
OD of BUTT = 0.94"=23.9mm,
ID of FUJI Rubber Gimbal= 22mm
ID of Rear EVA = 0.75" = 19mm
ID of ReelSeat = 24mm
ID of Fore EVA = 0.75"=19mm
ID of Winn Fore =0.62"=15.7mm

I found fuji rubber gimbal. ID is 22mm and I think I can fit it into 24mm rod butt since it is rubber.

Regarding Rear EVA, I can not find 16" rear eva( I can find 16" fore eva). So I want to use two 4" rear eva foams and 8" apart as shown config A1.

Regarding fore arm length, I want to use 12". I want to be more comfortable with rod leaning over the rail as I am not a muscle man.

BTW, I want to have some nice and fancy forearm. And I found WINN GRIP. mudhole has it.
http://www.winngripsfishing.com/other-grips/saltwater http://www.mudhole.com/Winn-Saltwater-F ... ight?ext=F
While I am entertaining this grip, I can not find any review. I like thinner OD(1.2") of grip. But I am not sure how it works when wet.
I know I can't hit the ball with wet golf grip.

Think Raul sent u my address that day..With all the "BLUE" chaos..no problem, i have a dog also
.along with crazy neighbors and guns!! :pistols: lol all in good fun

winngrip is fairly new and i HAVE NOT used it..doesnt mean i wont try it out....
you also have to take into consideration of the OD on all this, how would u transition the fall from eva to that winn drip? looks thin.. do u want to shape the eva down to it?

im gonna check out the winn grip site

I couldn't find American Tackle nanolite guides with SS.
I decided to go with "FUJI Silicon Nitride II"...whatever that is... was recommended for stand-up heavy saltwater fishing and for any type of fishing line.

Regarding forearm grip,
I measured OD of blank with caliper.

19.2mm ~ 21.5mm of OD of blank section for 12" forearm.
winn grip ID is 15.7 mm.

So 3.5 ~ 5.8 mm over size. Not sure if I can force it down.

I may have to call Mudhole...

There has been an error on step 2).

Here is the revised

For rear arm eva,

1-1) Make sure marking where Eva foam stops.
2) evenly apply rod bond to blank up to at least 3" longer than where Eva foam stops(1-1)

3) Push eva and 1" and back up, apply elmer cement (1 inch back and forth).
4) twist eva while forcing down first 5 inch.
5) And then all the way.

Jongsoo ,its simple the foam you going to install put it in d blank with no glue mark where the foam stop, get the glue paint the blank from where u mark the foam where it stop, I used an old toothbrush ,also I paint the foam inside ,you got to do all this kind of quick ,once u have paint blank n foam with glue put foam inside d blank and push down and stop where u mark to install but cap.

I hope this may be the final configuration on grip... I add 2" heat shrink tube directly on blank after reel seat as shown in blue.
I did a test 8ft rod on a drift boat a few days ago, I realized the space right after reel seat where my palm and fingers wrapping around is important to feel the fish bite.
I don't want any rear foam around that area... Although grouper and mutton bites are strong enough as they will pull the line, I want to make the rod sensitive...

I also want to use rubber shrink tube to cover fore and rear eva foams. I think it make the rod look nice.

the reel seat will sit up taller than that shrink wrap directly on blank.. gonna leave an awkward edge on front of reel seat.. maybe make a tapered collar then shrink wrap up to top of reel seat collar..
