Looking to buy a rod/reel setup with tax check.

Here's the deal, I have limited funds, I dont want to spend more then $150-$175 on a spinning rod combo. Any suggestions?

What are you looking to use it for? Also, don't forget, for that kind of money, you could go on a nice charter trip with FL Hogfish, and he provides all the gear...sometimes it is better to just go fish instead of buying more gear.

Thats one day, I need something to fish the piers and stuff with. For pompano, snapper, throwing lures/jigs. Need a 2 piece rod, and a 15-20lbs line reel.

I would go with a Spheros 4000 ($110) and then either check the used rod rack at T&R, or maybe an Ugly Stick Custom, or a Star Delux.

Thanks Rory. I was looking at the 4000, it seems like a good reel. Good for throwing jigs/lures, and stuff? not heavy, maybe put 17lbs line on it.

17 is too heavy, put 12 lb on it, or 15 lb braid. It is a decent overall size reel, if you go any bigger you won't want to fish lures with it because it will be too heavy and bulky. It'll work fine for chicken rigs for pompano too and freelining shrimp for snapper and snook.

I went through a few setups before I found my favorite all around setup.

4000 series reel loaded with 15lb super slick power pro

7' 10" rod med heavy fast action maybe 5/8th max weight for artificial lures or 1oz heavy if you might use live bait more

I have a similar setup and have done snook snapper barracuda blues sheepshead jacks and whatnot.

Extra length helps fighting bigger fish. Just wont be slinging much lead but like said before freelining shrimp or split shotting baits or egg sinkers you are good.
