Boat ramp on ocean side before reaching Key Largo.

Post by sinbad1 »

The location of this is about around MM102 or so. It is before a marine on the ocean side. As you turn off it goes down under the driving bridge and to the right it has a small ramp and a close gate after it on the dirt road towards the ocean side. But on the left side you can park under the bridge and I guess fish from the shoreline. Does anyone if it is safe there at night ( I got kids) and is the fishing worth it there??? Thanks for any info...

I think you are way off on the mile marker. 102 MM is exactly where the M/W tower is located in Key Largo.

But it sounds like you are talking about the Tavenier Creek Bridge. I use to launch my first offshore boat at that ramp in the mid 1960's which is located at MM 91.

Tavernier Creek used to be open to public, but now they will kick you out. Choose another location.

?? Tavernier creek is not closed to the public I fished under the bridge a few months ago there is still even walking paths to get under. My uncle lives there and I go out on the boat out of the creek and there's always people fishing there and that guy that lives their with 900 cats.
There is also no boat ramp at tavernier creek only tavernier creek Marina and private homes. I've only been going outta there since the 90's and even then there was no boat ramp.
I will be going next week so I can provide pictures for you guys to see.
I don't think he is talking about tavernier creek it is very lit and safe and there is no road that leads to it only into the private Marina... I think he is talking about near Gilbert's hotel like blackwater sound where you can drive under the bridge before you really enter key largo. Better known as Jewfish Creek bridge. If that's what your talking about I don't know about safety but i know guys fish it often along with flats boats guys too for your typical inshore species and maybe grouper hence the name jewfish creek.

I got kicked out of Tavernier Creek three times last year and was not lit. Maybe they changed things around. Last time I went it t was to the max with lobster traps. I sure would not take children there.

Gilbert's was also closed to fishing last year. The bridge that is.

There use to be a boat ramp right next to Tavernier Creek Bridge on the ocean side. I believe it now is hidden under the mangroves or was torn out.

Lobster trap place doesn't exist anymore A kayak place now I think but that's private property the bridge area isn't it's county... there is a walking path to the left of where the lobster traps were people get to under the bridge let me tell you if they're not kicking the cat man out which they haven't in almost 2yrs they shouldn't be kicking you out... There's businesses on both sides there is light more than around the other bridges like 2 or 5 and why wouldn't you bring children's there it's one of the scattered upper class communities in the area hell there's 2 schools there.
I don't know about Gilbert's I haven't fished there but I know guys fish under it obviously not on the bridge it's way to high. But I know the original poster is not taking about tavernier creek
That definitely wasn't a public ramp maybe in the 60's though like I said since 90's there's none in that area

You are correct, there was one a couple of years ago. They had put big rocks so people could not launch anything from there. But again, things can change from one year to the next.

In Channel #2 park on the southside so you can see your car.

The ramp was basically just dirt, a whole in between the mangroves. Many like that in the keys.

This is all besides the point anyways.
The OP is not talking about tavernier creek which is like mm 90,, Gilbert's and jewfish creek is mm 107 much closer to the OP's information about where he was maybe even mistaked a 7 for a 2. There is no road that goes under tavernier bridge only down the side for a bit but not under. jewfish creek however has a loop road that goes completely under the driving bridge. He also mentioned before you reach key largo which would be closer to jewfish as once you've hit tavernier it's not key largo anymore.

Guys thanks for all the info. I read all the replies and I do think it's jewfish creek. This is a bit right after Gibert's, There is even a ramp sign on the left hand side of the road as you get to the turn entrance. And yes there is a road that takes you down along the side of the drive by bridge. As you come to the end of the road you either make a right turn towards the small ramp which it also has a small wooden dock. A bit further down is were a steel tube gate is located which is locked. Now if you make a left turn instead of a right, you can go underneath the driving bridge. Also if you launch a boat from that ramp you can only go out towards the gulf side because the ocean side has a dam across that allows water to go through but not a boat. And I did see a couple of small boat trailers parked there when I went. Either way I will be trying it out this weekend and I'll let you guys know exactly where it is. I hate to have to drive all the way to Ch2 and further just for a half day of fishing.

The spot with the dam and a nearby ramp with a small dock nearby sounds like the Aero Jet Canal off the 18 mile stretch. Technically that spot is not even located in the Keys. Many years ago (Like 30) i had to shoot (in the air) to avoid being robbed by three dirt bags (Migrants) at mid day. I would not fish there at night.

He's right the dam part is odd none at jewfish, Aerojet yes but that's way off key largo too. Sinbad can you look at it on google maps and give us a better idea?
I mean you can get off the road right before Gilbert's is that what you meant by before it? there's another canal right before jewfish does it have a dam? and theres a walking path.

Your description Sinbad matches the Aero Jet Canal to a "T" . This canal is a fresh water canal that drains the eastern border of the Everglades National Park. It does not go into the Gulf. The other side of the flood control dam is the salt water side and connects to Manatee Bay.

This is the boat ramp sign he is mentioned on US1 heading south:

And this is the ramp with the small dock, the gate, and the dam in the background.
