6500C rebuild?

I mostly lurk, but always learn from this site. I do most of my fishing from a kayak. After a wet beach landing where my Abu got dunked, I went home and did the usual freshwater rinse and wipe down. Then, on my trip to Flamingo last week the reel had a sticky drag and seemed to cast with a little less distance and a little more noise.

This is the silver 6500C Ultra Cast marked Made in Sweden, my go to reel for casting spooks.

Can any one reccomend somebody that might be able to get my Abu 6500C serviced in the Ft. Lauderdale/Broward area? Do I really have to send it off to some other area?

Any help with this would be appreciated

here in ky we take apart our own reels including abu's once a year and go through them, not to replace parts but to clean and oil things, they have a lot of parts but with the diagram they are not to hard to figure out. maybe an option, but maybe you'd rather have a professional

I do remove and replace the sideplates for clean/lube. I think I have a bearing and drag problem that may be a little over my expertise.

As a last resort, I'll take one of my 30+ year old retired 6500C apart to see if I'm able to replace/service bearings and drag.

i've had problems with some of my abu's here in freshwater and when i take them apart and put them back together it seems to be the magic cure but you could have a more serious problem that needs professional attn. Just my 2 cents

Try Some REEL MAGIC it really works. If it's still not working the way it should take it to CARL'S BAIT & TACKLE They have a Pink hammer head shark mounted on the roof. Repair is cheap and it takes about a week.
In the future I would Strongly reccomend buying a Shamino reel I've used them for years and they are very good value.

Before sending it out find yourself the parts diagram and then tear it down completely. Next soak anything that is all metal in mineral spirits ie paint thinner. That will clean out the bearings and strip the old grease, after vigorous shaking (Be careful though it creates pressure if you use a sealed object so let it out occasionally) next dry it off then clean it off with water. Blow dry those parts clean to get rid of all the water. While soaking clean all the plastic parts seperately with a rag, because the mineral spirits will warp them something bad. After all is said and done reassemble and regrease everything except the bearings using only a light coat for it all. For the bearings put some oil on them. Your reel should be perfect now.

This saved my last shimano from a costly parts replacement and repair bill and continues to help me out today. The mineral spirits will take off any paint too (DUH) so leave out anything that you don't want the paint coming off. Its real simple and only takes about an hour to two hours, depending on your profenciency for putting things back together. Ask any questions if you need to, this really helps you learn about your reel and makes you self sufficient.

Do put any thing in paint thinner that the ludicrous information I've heard given. I you think you have an inclination go foward with diagnosising the problem independently. If you are not confindent you can reasemble you reel. don't do any thing. If your going to have it examined by a professional here is the contact information for Carl's bait and tackle

I completely took apart a 30+ year old and tired 6500 and tried to re-assemble it from memory. Not happening

I don't have the schematics/parts list, which might help.

Still looking for a website that might be of help. I guess Carl's it is

Well to each their own I only say what I have personally used and have had success with. The chemical reaction between the mineral spirits and the grease cause the grease to completely dissolve and become suspended in the solution. The chemical which you are relying on to complete this reaction is methlyene chloride. Again not ludicrous because it works, just use gloves and do it outside.

Jake is saying on Metal parts NOT Plastic, I have used Automobile Carbarator cleaner to clean my metal parts before, which I believe may be a similar chemical.

I have not seen any problems useing this type of chemical, I am not saying it is good because I don't know I am not a reel technician, just that it worked for me.

Purpose for removing all oil and grease is because Salt, Sand, Shells and even Micro metal shavings "from gears through normal use" build up in the grease and this stiffen function and smoothness and this could be all that is wrong.

As to not having a schematics/parts list you may be able to get it online just start searching all the main engines and also check the Manufacturer, they may have a .pdf file for download.

I do not take my Shemano Spinners and Conventionals apart to many pieces, so if Abu is like Shemano take it to a Tackle shop and skip the headache.

Ok you just go play with your paint thinner and have fun doing it I would strongly advise anyone from doing this it's not a grease problem so the information you provided was as useless as taking a blind man hunting. enjoy your meth!

borntofish aren't you the same guy who doesn't know his d!@# from his thumb any other time? the thinner probably will fix the problem and all it does to metal is strip it. any grease or junk in the parts will be gone. if you can put the reel back together after you properly lube everything it should be like new. those reels arent that hard to put together. i dont even own one and i disambeled one and cleaned it for a buddy. as far as being a smart ass to bf and jake, you might want to appologize. you ask far to many questions to make enemies.

Yeah I couldnt agree more on the comments that have been made. Its really hard to help someone that is all the time seeming like they are pissed at the entire world. I mean if you can't enjoy the sport of fishing don't try to take part in it. Fishing is something that should bring stress relief and quality to our lives. Not piss us off and make us negative towards others.

As far as the paint thinner and the reel, "MOST" times yes it will fix the problem to clean the reel and put back a high quality lubricant. I mean to ask so many questions and then tell someone else they don't know what there talking about is just not good. I ask a lot of questions myself but never try to degrade anyones opinions.

I just think it would be best if we all came to the forum with a good attitude instead of one thats pissed at the world!!!!
