Heres a better way to trolly baits.....

Well i fish mostly in South carolina at the time being, but come fall south florida will be my home. So having fished both places and seen the techniques used by both i knew i needed to think up some way to get the best of both worlds.

Up in SC they are hardcore trolly fishermen using the two rod set up, one ancor and one fighting rod.....down in florida that isnt exactly the norm and having the whole two rod thing seems to get on the nerves of some, but trolly fishing down there has proven to catch some serious fish. Also down there the rod limit can but heads with this type of fishing.

So heres the method ive come up with that seems to work quite well...

Using either an 8-9' rod, paired with bigger spinning or casting rod...i used an avet lx and a ten foot pole but there were very few people fishing.... and also a rod mount helps for this method...you will also need a spool of 4 or 6lb line

1.to start off cast out your sinker with your pole. Ive came up with a way to make a 2-3oz egg sinker have the hold of an 8oz pyramid....simply go so homedepot and get some wire, run four prongs through the egg sinker, making a loop at the top and four legs at the bottom to form an ancor, this will hold like big lead but wont cause the drag or the hook pulls.....attach your ancor using a spider hitch to deepsea swivel knot, will give you a doubled line which will prevent breakoffs...

2.Now that your sinker is set you need a way to attach your bait....i use what they call a sinker slide you can get them at walmart, i just take the little nylon sleeve off, a regular castlock swivel works just fine....attach the smaller loop side to the leader, for the leader i use #4 with two 4x hooks and a stinger....now take your leader and bait and snap it onto the ancor line

3. Now this is where the interesting part comes into play.......and also where the rod mount helps alot.

befor you slide the bait down take your spool of 4-6# line and attach it to your sinkerslide or your castlock....now using this line lower the bait to the desired place so it can flip flop around on the surface. loop a couple yards around your rod mount so you have full adjustability of where the bait is...Now when the fish hits the 4-6# will break and you will be on the fish..

Now you have the control of the two rod system and the convenience of just one rod.....tell me what you think, confusing alittle aat first but very simple when used

so your casting rod witht he sinker has 4-6lb test for maximum casting distance right? and I liek the idead of less weight instead of having to fight the fish with a frekin 5 or 60z constantyl pulling the snap swivel.

Hey, does anyone have a diagram of this? I can't exactly figure out how to rig up so one of the rods "break away"...

What do you use the clothes pin for?

I am still trying to see the advantage to having 2 poles and 2 lines out when with a 1 pole ststem, once the ball before the weight makes contact with thye swivel, there is only one line to worry about. I think I may be missing something

Funny thing is, I never saw the "extra rod" as an issue on what were very, very crowded piers. The anchor rods stayed out all day, you just ran another clip down if your bait was taken. A good day, you might have 5-6 rigs come up when you pulled your anchor.

8 is alot, in fact I think the standard 6 pulls a pretty big hole to loose a fish to a head shake with....I bet it would fly here too to be honest. Care to demo this next time we are out?

Rather than using a shower curtain ring, you can use a swivel. The idea behind the ring is a bright color to help ID your rig amongst the others...

Man I am gonna try the 2 rod setup on dania sometime. The sick part is that you can cast out on a big rod and if you want catch the fish on light tackle.

I fish these rigs all summer an i have to say they are far superior to any one pole trolly rig. The fact that you can use say 30 lb (ive even used 50 when i only have one or two ancors left) and a 6-8oz ancor with wire prongs sticking out and hurl it out till you get it right where ya want it then leave it all day helps. Also i think you guys are missing the fact that even in windy conditions you can get a bait out.....just by adding a larger weight to your release clip.

a 10-12ft pole is common for a ancor pole, except that the ancor rod is stood straight up.....think about it....way better angle to get the bait out further....plus the ancor used can be pulled on almost as hard as you want without budging allowing you te get the bait out way further also. By adjusting the tension on the ancor line an the line out on ur fightin rod you can place the bait where ever you want...

unique system but once your used to it, it works like nothing else.......it uses the same idea as a kite rig....and if youve used a kite you know why they work so well
